Seasonal Bass Fishing: Tips For Different Times Of The Year | Bass Fishing Magazine: Learn How to Bass Fish with Bass Angler Magazine: "The general consensus is that bass will bite at any time during the course of a day, but the first and last light of the day (dawn and dusk) are prime times. Bass are most active in cool water between 60-75 degrees Fahrenheit, which means spring and fall are the best seasons to catch them. Colder water slows down the metabolism of the fish, which suppresses their appetites and makes them tougher to catch. Warmer water means lower dissolved oxygen levels, less movement and fewer opportunities for anglers."

Perhaps my greatest surprise was the “exploded” drawing of the reel that was included in the box.  It measures 10” by 14.”  For those of us who like to maintain their own reels, the drawing is a godsend compared to the seemingly postage-stamp drawings provided by other manufacturers.

How to Fish Your Way Around Cold Water Jerkbaits | The Ultimate Bass Fishing Resource Guide® LLC

How to Fish Your Way Around Cold Water Jerkbaits | The Ultimate Bass Fishing Resource Guide® LLC: "Bassmaster Magazine recently featured another illustrious “Day on the Lake” article by Don Wirth in which likeable razorback pro Mike McClelland provided an excellent education on how to lure slow moving bass from 48-degree water with his suspending McStick jerkbait.
There’s no doubt suspending stickbaits have accounted for tens-of-thousands of tournament winnings when water surface temps are in the 40s throughout America’s heartland. And McClelland has certainly sacked up his fair share of coin on the slow moving shad imitators.
McClelland suspects that the inability for most guys to remain patient, in order to pause for as long as 30 to 45 seconds between the twitches of the lure once it’s reached its suspending depth, is the reason many anglers lack success with them."

Using Seasonal Patterns to Locate Bass | The Ultimate Bass Fishing Resource Guide® LLC

Using Seasonal Patterns to Locate Bass | The Ultimate Bass Fishing Resource Guide® LLC: "Most novice and advanced anglers can take advantage of a seasonal plan of attack. The plan should be aimed at simplifying bass fishing so that everything you know, or have, is not with you every trip to the lake.
One way to make bass fishing simpler is to break your approach into seasons. The seasons for our discussion will be: Spring: temperature rises to 60 degrees, and lasts until it reaches 80 degrees. Summer: the period the water temperature is above 80 degrees. Fall: occurs when the temperature falls below 80 degrees, and lasts until it reaches 60 degrees; Winter: starts at 60 degrees and continues as long as the temperature stays below 60 degrees.
During each season we will look at the entire water column. We are going to address how you fish for shallow fish (one to 10 feet), mid-depth (10 to 20 feet) and deep (20 feet or deeper)."

Fallen Through the Ice? What to do? | The Ultimate Bass Fishing Resource Guide® LLC

Fallen Through the Ice? What to do? | The Ultimate Bass Fishing Resource Guide® LLC: "The best way to avoid falling through is to not go out on the ice at all. But for those of us in the north who live and recreate outdoors... we will eventually find ourselves on the ice. Ice fishing, trapping, ice skating, ice boating and cross country skiing are a few activities where you may find thin ice.
I don't consider "falling through" breaking through ice and getting your toes wet. "Falling through" means going in at least up to your chest. With that defined, I have fallen through ice three times while ice fishing and once while trapping. My father (Randy) and brother (Scott) have fallen through a dozen or more times, all while trapping. Are we stupid? Debatable, but I'd like to think not. Did we go out on thin ice? Not intentionally."

Asian Carp Report: Cost to Protect Great Lakes as High as $18 Billion | OutdoorHub

Asian Carp Report: Cost to Protect Great Lakes as High as $18 Billion | OutdoorHub: "On Monday, the US Army Corps of Engineers submitted to Congress a long-awaited report on options to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes. Formally titled the “Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study” (GLMRIS), it sought to determine potential solutions to the threat that Asian carp present to the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world. The document suggests eight possible courses of action, the most expensive of which will take 25 years and cost over $18 billion to complete."

Panfish Heaven: Tips for Ice Fishermen Targeting Great Lakes Harbors | OutdoorHub

Panfish Heaven: Tips for Ice Fishermen Targeting Great Lakes Harbors | OutdoorHub: "Each year thousands of ice fisherman flock to the Great Lakes in search of trophy walleye. Living in close proximity to Lake Erie, I was often a repeat customer during the ice season. But unstable weather, shifting ice, and Coast Guard rescues began to chip away at my desire to head out on the big water for trophy ‘eyes. Erie’s yellow perch population isn’t all that accessible most times either, spending much of the winter far, far away in the lake’s main basin. These factors have led many anglers, myself included, to explore the central Great Lakes panfish population, often unexploited in the many harbors and boat basins throughout Michigan and Ohio."

Learn about freshwater fishing rigs | Take Me Fishing

Learn about freshwater fishing rigs | Take Me Fishing: "A fishing rig is the way you tie together bait, lures, hook, swivels, leaders, sinkers, bobbers, flashers, dodgers, cheese doodles and anything else you can attach to a piece of fishing line.
But just because you can tie a lot of different things to a line, doesn't mean that making a fishing rig has to be complicated. Most fishing rigs are designed fairly simply and are used for specific fishing techniques."

More Tips for Mid-season Ice Fishing | OutdoorHub

More Tips for Mid-season Ice Fishing | OutdoorHub: "In many areas where anglers fish through the ice this time of year, we are at about midway through the season. Most lakes have a good cover of ice as well as some snow. We also have cold weather, and lots of it. There are a number of things anglers can do to catch more fish through the ice this time of year, but you’ve got to go fishing to catch’em. That sounds pretty simplistic, but considering that being cold isn’t fun for most people, they don’t go fishing when it’s too cold. With today’s clothing options, however, you don’t need to be cold. Dress appropriately and get out there."

Winter Color Selection of Bass Jigs

Winter Color Selection of Bass Jigs: "In many areas around the country where anglers live and fish, tackle selection can be somewhat limited to whatever is left at the local tackle shop. Limited selection makes it difficult to be creative or scientific in selecting the correct color to match forage and water conditions on any given day. However I have seen some amazing jigs made by a mother and her son that own and operate Bass Attacker Lures. The family ran business reflects fishing know how and true lure artisanship that shows in their custom tackle. Seth Sutton recently won first place as well as big fish in a tournament that he fished alongside adults and seasoned anglers. The victory was not just a testimony to his fishing skill but an overwhelming acknowledgement of his understanding of fishing conditions with colors choices that can match the forage. Seth was more than happy to share his winning tactics with me. I will share his story and some other winter color selection tips to help you catch more bass."

Ice, Ice Fishy | The Ultimate Bass Fishing Resource Guide® LLC

Ice, Ice Fishy | The Ultimate Bass Fishing Resource Guide® LLC: "It can be tragic when you fall through it and exceptional when you are fishing under it.
Ice fishing takes anglers into a whole different world than what we southerners know. Our northern friends tolerate summer...to get to winter. Where anglers drag sleds, ice houses, or portable shelters loaded with gear that a southerner never sees, across a sheet of ice to a spot they've scouted before, to fish through a hole with scaled-down rods the size of my neighbor boy's Snoopy rig, reels, and line. When ice forms over fishing water, summer, boats, and topwater lures are long gone. Nevertheless, once the ice is sufficiently thick to support the weight of fishermen and gear, numerous anglers venture out, knowing ice fishing can be one of the most rewarding times to fish; especially in small lakes and ponds."

DIY Bahamas Bonefishing | OutdoorHub: "One of the best winter vacations I ever took also morphed into one of my favorite fishing trips of all time. I like doing things on my own, and while I always recommend hiring a fishing guide to get the lay of the water, once I have a handle on the basics of the local fish movements and feeding patterns I prefer to pursue them—and fool them—by myself. Wading for bonefish is a special opportunity, and the Bahamas one of the few places where an angler can access some prime “wet-butt” fishing grounds without having to hire the services of a guide and a boat. I stumbled upon a great place to do just that while on a winter vacation arranged by—and shared with—my wife."

1. In winter, trout won’t move more than a few inches for your fly and they’ll be close to the bottom. So, fish your flies deep and slowly. Your best bet is a nymph fished dead-drift."

Slow Down For Winter | The Ultimate Bass Fishing Resource Guide® LLC

Slow Down For Winter | The Ultimate Bass Fishing Resource Guide® LLC: "This winter and early spring season of the year is a fine time to chase Mr. Largemouth. Actually, "chase" may not be the right word in these cold water temperatures. A slow, steadfast pursuit is more like it.
Most of the time in late winter, cabin fever is running pretty high. Anglers are ready to rock and roll, but the half-frozen bass are sulking on the bottom somewhere in deep water waiting for spring. These two contradictory and opposing moods often result in a tough bite. Quite often it's a really tough bite."

Are We Overdoing Catch And Release? | The Ultimate Bass Fishing Resource Guide® LLC

Are We Overdoing Catch And Release? | The Ultimate Bass Fishing Resource Guide® LLC: "The art of catch and release could be on the verge of be coming the next big concern of fishery managers and biologists. It's actually already been under scrutiny for some time because keep-and-eat is what's supposedly missing from "workable" slot limits. Fisheries biologists claim that the only way slot limits really work for any lake is for small fish, those under the slot, to be retained in larger numbers than what is currently in style with bass fishing society (which is practically none).
But they were inclined to support and promote catch and release as part of their fisheries plans and perhaps had hoped to strike some kind of balance between live release and a visit to the table, for bass in particular. No one realized that catch and release would become THE THING TO DO, almost a religious experience, for bass anglers and that such a noble ethic could become a problem for fisheries management."
