Flippin' Matted Grass for Late Summer Lunkers | The Ultimate Bass Fishing Resource Guide® LLC

Flippin' Matted Grass for Late Summer Lunkers | The Ultimate Bass Fishing Resource Guide® LLC: "Heading into late summer, hot temperatures and limited rain normally produce dropping water levels in many lakes. Meanwhile, abundant sunshine and clearer water produce the most prolific weedbeds in our lakes at the same time. The combination of lowered water levels and exploding weed growth results in huge fields of matted grassbeds. This placid looking flotilla of hydrilla, milfoil, and other submerged vegetation belies the labyrinth of tunnels beneath the surface where bass are actively feeding on bluegill and shad. From late summer through fall, flipping matted grass can make for outstanding shallow water fishing for big bass, even on the hottest and sunniest days of the year."

The anglers were reeling in a 350-pound blue marlin when the fish launched bill-first into the ship, barely missing two men. Although rare, marlin are capable of impaling anglers with their long snouts, such as one young American man who got stabbed through the cheek and nasal cavity in 2008. It is believed that blue marlins use their bills to stun and slash through schools of fish and then return to consume the injured prey. Coupled with their excellent jumping abilities, these prized sport fish could present a danger to anglers."

The invention of the propeller changed the world.  Whether it was attached to a boat or an airplane, it is associated with high RPM's – (Revolutions Per Minute) – and designed for increasing the speed at which something moves.
So when Smithwick designed and manufactured the Devil’s Horse back in the 1950’s, equipped with not one but two props, it is understandable why anglers still make the connection between props and speed.  Novice anglers often tie on the bait for the first time and assume it should be raced across the surface, or “ripped” sporadically back to the boat. "

After all, casting to shore is relatively easy - you have a highly visible target (shoreline) and all you have to do is choose a lure and cover the water. During the summer especially, when water temperatures soar and dissolved oxygen is scarce in the shallows, the bass will just be more comfortable down deep. But warmer water means they need to eat more, so an angler who masters deep-water fishing techniques can be extremely successful."
