Our first drift in Lake St. Clair, maybe 90 minutes over 15 feet of water with isolated patches of sand grass about five miles offshore, resulted in seven smallmouth bass (and a couple of rock bass). Neither fast, nor furious, but solid; the fish probably averaged a little better than two pounds."

Pocket : Video: Angler Narrowly Misses Being Skewered by Jumping Marlin

Pocket : Video: Angler Narrowly Misses Being Skewered by Jumping Marlin: "The anglers aboard the Marlin Darlin got a little too close with their boat’s namesake last Thursday morning while fishing off the coast of the Dominican Republic. The anglers were reeling in a 350-pound blue marlin when the fish launched bill-first into the ship, barely missing two men. Although rare, marlin are capable of impaling anglers with their long snouts, such as one young American man who got stabbed through the cheek and nasal cavity in 2008. It is believed that blue marlins use their bills to stun and slash through schools of fish and then return to consume the injured prey. Coupled with their excellent jumping abilities, these prized sport fish could present a danger to anglers."

Pocket : Drifting Flies for Michigan Perch

Pocket : Drifting Flies for Michigan Perch: "If you want to catch Michigan perch and lots of them, try drifting for them with a rig featuring two flies baited with minnows.

“I think flies give a little more action to trigger fish, and if the fishing is really good, you don’t even need minnows,” says Adam Pyle, who runs Pyle’s Porthole in South Haven and harvests his share of the tasty panfish whenever time allows him to get out of his tackle shop. South Haven is well known as a great port for targeting Lake Michigan perch. This week, anglers were harvesting 35-fish limits in about 40 feet of water, and Pyle said rigs featuring flies were part of the winning combination."

Pocket : Drop Shot Fishing for Summertime Smallmouth

Pocket : Drop Shot Fishing for Summertime Smallmouth: "Drop shot fishing for smallmouth bass in the summer months can be very successful on Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie.

Tournament bass fishing probably drives general fishing trends more than any one source. Winning a bass tournament on a particular lure often causes sales of that product to skyrocket, making lucky manufacturers overnight millionaires. And quite frequently, techniques that dominate the tournament scene often overshadow those that dominate local fisheries. Such is the case on Michigan’s portion of the Great Lakes."

His key was to consistently catch the bigger bass in depths of 7-12 feet. While most of the anglers were fishing shallow, Cliff was just a little deeper then the staging areas that others were keying on."
